Lisa had always believed that if she worked hard enough, loved deeply enough, and stayed kind, life would eventually reward her. At thirty years old, she was a dedicated nurse, compassionate, skilled, and well-respected by her colleagues. But her personal life was in ruins.
She sat across from her best friend Becky at their favorite little café, stirring her latte with a sigh that carried years of disappointment. Lisa was pretty in a soft, natural way, long, wavy brown hair that fell past her shoulders, gentle hazel eyes, full cheeks with a light dusting of freckles, and a curvy, womanly body that no amount of gym sessions seemed to slim down the way she wanted. She felt invisible to men.
“I just don’t get it, Becky,” Lisa said quietly, her voice heavy. “I try so hard. The dating apps are brutal. I barely get matches, and when I do… they ghost me after one date. I feel so unattractive. So… undesirable.”
Becky, by contrast, was stunning. Tall, confident, with sharp cheekbones, piercing blue eyes, and a body that turned heads everywhere she went. Her long blonde hair was always perfect, and she carried herself with effortless seduction. She was also a heavy smoker, never hiding it.
Becky reached across the table and squeezed Lisa’s hand.
“Honey, you’re beautiful. You just need to believe it. And maybe… try something different. Something bold.”
Lisa raised an eyebrow. “Like what?”
Becky took a slow sip of her coffee, then smiled knowingly. “Well… I went on a date last week with this guy who was absolutely obsessed with me smoking. Like, turned on in a way I’ve never seen before. He couldn’t keep his hands off me the whole night. I never thought smoking could be such a turn-on, especially with how many anti-smokers there are these days.”
Lisa stared at her, genuinely shocked. “You’re kidding.”
“I’m not. Maybe you should try it,” Becky said playfully, leaning in. “You smoked a few times with me back in college, remember? Just for fun. Maybe it could help you feel more confident. More… seductive.”
Lisa shook her head immediately. “No way. I’m a nurse, Becky. I see what smoking does to people every day. I could never.”
Two weeks later, after yet another disastrous date, a man who spent the entire evening talking about his ex, Lisa sat alone in her apartment, feeling more defeated than ever. The loneliness was crushing. On impulse, she texted Becky.
Lisa: Fine. Let’s go out Friday. Just… don’t push the smoking thing too hard.
Friday night arrived.
The bar was lively and dimly lit. Lisa had put effort into her appearance, a fitted black top that showed a hint of cleavage, a knee-length skirt that hugged her curvy hips, and her long brown hair styled in soft waves. Becky looked stunning as always in a tight red dress.
After a couple of strong cocktails, Lisa felt the alcohol warming her blood. The two women stood at a high-top table near the edge of the bar. Becky lit a cigarette with practiced grace, a slim white Marlboro Light, and exhaled elegantly.
Lisa watched, mesmerized despite herself.
“You look like you need one,” Becky said softly, shaking another cigarette from the pack and offering it to her.
Lisa’s heart raced. She hesitated for a long moment, her mind screaming at her to say no. But the loneliness, the frustration, the desperate desire to feel desired… it all pushed her forward.
“Okay,” she whispered. “Just one.”
