Smoking Stories

September 2
Moved into the dorm today. The room is small. Two beds, two desks, one window. My roommate is Daniela. She was already here when I arrived. She had a cigarette in her hand. The room smelled strongly of smoke.

She said hi and offered me one right away. I said no thanks. I only smoke one or two a day, and not every day. Sometimes I go days without. I almost chose a non-smoking dorm, but they were all full. Only smoking ones left. So here I am.

I unpacked my things. Daniela smoked two more while I did. She doesn’t open the window much. The smoke just stays. I wonder if I should try to quit now that I’m at college. It would be easier if the room didn’t smell like this all the time.

September 3
First full day. Classes start tomorrow. Daniela woke up and lit a cigarette before she even got out of bed. She smoked while getting dressed. She smoked while we walked to the dining hall.

I had one cigarette after lunch. Just one. I told myself that was enough. In the evening she offered me another. I took it. It felt polite. We sat on our beds and talked a bit. She has been smoking two packs a day since she was fourteen. She said it like it was normal.

The room smells constantly. I opened the window for a while. She didn’t mind.

September 4
Classes began. Nothing too hard yet. Came back to the dorm and Daniela was already smoking. Ashtray full. Pack open on her desk.

I smoked one in the afternoon. Then later she handed me another while we watched something on her laptop. I smoked it. Two today. Same as my old habit. I can still control this.

September 8
Woke up to the smell of smoke. Daniela was already on her second or third cigarette of the morning. She offered me one. I said not yet. Had coffee instead.

Later in the day I smoked two. One after a short walk, one at night. The smoke in the room is getting normal. I don’t notice it as much as the first day.

September 13
Party in another dorm building tonight. Daniela dragged me along. Lots of people, music, beer. Almost everyone was smoking. Daniela stayed close and kept lighting cigarettes. She passed me one without asking. I smoked it. Then another later.

Came back to the room around one in the morning. We both smoked one more before sleep. Three or four today. More than usual. I told myself it was just because of the party.

September 14
Sunday. Quiet day. Studied a little. Daniela smoked all morning. I sat at my desk and tried to ignore it. By afternoon I asked her for one. She smiled and gave me the pack.

I smoked three today. Still not every hour or anything. Just more than before. I keep thinking I should cut back, but the room makes it hard.

September 22
Monday classes. Felt a bit tired. After my last class I came back and lit a cigarette right away. Daniela was already smoking. We talked about the professors. She offered me another before dinner. I took it.

Five cigarettes today. I’m noticing I reach for them faster when she’s smoking next to me.

September 25
Woke up wanting one. That hasn’t happened much before. I waited until after breakfast. Then smoked. Daniela laughed and said “welcome to the club.”

Smoked six today. One in the morning, a couple in the afternoon, two at night. Still telling myself this is temporary. College stress or something.

September 28
Had a short quiz in one class. Felt a little nervous. Smoked two during the day and two more at night with Daniela. She finishes packs so fast. She buys new ones almost every day.

I’m starting to buy my own more often too. Used to last me a week. Now a pack goes quicker.
