Wednesday started unusually calm in the salon. It was one of those lazy, slow afternoons when the city slows down and the rays of the sun lazily pour through the large glass windows. We almost didn’t even have jobs. Only two customers came in, and I routinely finished washing my hair and cleaned the counters. However, that day was different. I came to work for the first time in that new wardrobe that Lisa bought me.
“Man, Ena, you’ve got a waist! Look how well those pants fit you,” commented one longtime customer, as I handed her the popular fashion magazine “Obsession.”
A little while later, Lisa’s beautician Sarah, who was sitting at the counter filing her nails, looked up and said “Baby, you look great. You finally got those bags off.”
Those words, that unexpected attention from women who until yesterday were strangers to me, acted like a salve. My inner shield was slowly giving way. I felt a subtle, warm wave of confidence wash over my body.
Around three in the afternoon, the salon was completely empty. There are only three of us left. Lisa and Sara were sitting near the window, enveloped in bluish smoke that was lazily creeping up the walls. The way Lisa held out the filter, her lips slightly parted, and how Sarah followed each curl of smoke with relish, was almost hypnotizing. Everything screamed about the freedom that had been denied to me for years. Looking at those long cigarettes between their fingers, I remembered my photos, I felt my stomach tighten with some strange, sweet restlessness.
Suddenly, Lisa put out her cigarette, stood up and fixed her gaze on me. She had that dangerous, determined expression of hers as she picked up the scissors and deftly twirled them around her fingers.
“Sweetie, sit in the chair,” she said sharply. “Time to get rid of that nest on your head. You look too tame for this job.”
“Lisa, that’s out of the question,” I took a step back, instinctively grabbing a hand at my plain, straight ponytail. “My hair is just fine. I don’t want to change anything.”
“I’m not asking you, I’m telling you,” she interrupted, pushing me roughly but warmly into the soft leather seat. “Relax for once in your life. I’m not going to cut your head off.”
I gave in, stiff, as she deftly removed the elastic and let my lifeless hair fall. Lisa worked quickly, with an incredible, almost artistic sense of form. The scissors clicked sharply and rhythmically through the air, strands falling around my feet. Instead of a long, faceless ponytail, Lisa gave me a stylish, sexy bob, the back was cut just above the neck, while the front was left with sharp, asymmetrical strands that fell right along my jawline, accentuating the neck and cheekbones. There was something wild about it, yet incredibly attractive.
While Lisa was finishing her blow-drying, inhaling the smoke of a new cigarette she had lit in the meantime, Sarah was already approaching with a large palette of makeup. Before I could protest, her hand went into action. She drew black, sharp lines with eyeliner around my eyes that gave my look a feline, penetrating depth, and she applied a dark, matte lipstick in the color of a ripe cherry to my lips.
“Done. Look at you,” Lisa said, shaking off the ashes and removing the protective cloak from me.
I was speechless in front of the mirror. My face was still there, behind the thin frames of my eyeglasses, but the hair and makeup made me look… beautiful. Sharp. Almost dangerous. Looking at me from the reflection was a girl who looked like she could stomp on anyone who got in her way.
When I got home, Marta was sitting on the couch. As soon as I stepped into the hall, she looked up and literally jumped.
“Man… Ena!” she exclaimed, walking up to me with pure delight on her face. “You look amazing! That hair… that makeup… Lisa has completely transformed you. You look so hot and hot.”
Her sincere compliment instantly raised my self-confidence to the ceiling. I felt that the last piece of the old, tight Enna was disappearing in me. All the barriers between the two of us have definitely fallen, now we really have become real, close friends.
Not long after, we went out on the terrace. The night was still, warm and starry, and the city below us hummed softly. We sat in cane chairs, relaxed, and talked for hours about the salon, the strange customers, and the music. I felt an incredible peace.
“Honestly, Ena, you looked very sexy in those photos, and now with that new hairstyle, so much femininity comes out of you, the new photos would be even more powerful and sexier.” – Marta told me, I liked her praise, my confidence grew, I could imagine myself in photos with a new hairstyle and a cigarette in my mouth.
At one point, Marta took out her pack, lit a cigarette and leaned back, sighing deeply. The breeze blew thick, bluish smoke straight toward my face. I instinctively prepared to cough or turn my head away, as I would have done just two weeks ago. But then I realized nothing happened. The smoke passed over my face, entered my nostrils, and I realized that the smell didn’t bother me at all anymore. It has become natural to me, even somewhat pleasant, as an integral part of this night’s peace and freedom of ours.
After a long conversation, Marta fell asleep. She stood up, stretched and headed for her room.
“Good night, Ena,” she said sleepily, but in her haste she forgot her elegant cigarette case and plastic lighter on the patio table.
I was left alone in the silence of the night. My eyes fell on a pack of cigarettes lying under the moonlight. My heart started beating wildly and fast in my chest. Yesterday’s photos, the compliments I received for my appearance, that feeling of power… The inner drive was stronger than me…. I couldn’t resist…
I took the pack with trembling fingers, pulled out a long, white cigarette and with a quick, silent step went to the bathroom, right in front of the big mirror.
I turned on the light. There stood a completely new Ena, no longer the scared nerd. A girl with trendy, sexy hair whose sharp strands framed her face, dressed in a tight black satin corset and jacket that perfectly defined her body, and wearing thin glasses, I didn’t even know what a beautiful body I had.
Slowly, I put the unlit cigarette between my lips, mimicking the pose from yesterday’s photo shoot. I felt the paper stick to my lower lip, and that dry, sharp smell of tobacco was right under my nose. I wrapped my fingers around the filter, holding it exactly the way Lisa held it, cocky and confident. The corset emphasized my silhouette, and the extinguished cigarette in my mouth gave me the appearance of a girl who is about to break every possible rule. I looked at my reflection and felt a hot wave of power wash over me. It was terrifyingly sexy.
I knew how destructive cigarettes were, I hated them all my life, and yet, looking at myself in the mirror, I wanted to light one. New Ena wanted to be like her aunt and roommate, and soon nothing would be able to stop her.
